Eighth Grade Language Arts

On May 10, the 8th grade class traveled to Milwaukee to Congregation Shalom to be a part of the program "From Ignorance and Fear to Knowledge and Understanding: Jews, Judaism and the Holocaust." This was a three-part program beginning with an introduction to Judaism and the symbolism of the synagogue. The second part was a visually interactive lesson on how the Nazis used words in their propaganda to shape the views of the German people toward the Jews and how the words used by students affect those in the world around them. The final part of the program was hearing testimony from a Holocaust survivor. Students were there as a conclusion to a mini unit on the Holocaust. Previous to the field trip, students had read a play based on the Diary of Anne Frank, and they had written a research paper on a teenage hero of the Holocaust.
